August 2024 Progress

It has been a month of high velocity at Wilcox Technologies. We have launched on GitHub Sponsors, solved issues with Rust and Clang, and have a special project announcement. Now, I would like to detail some of our more noteworthy achievements.

We have officially launched on GitHub Sponsors, providing another way you can contribute to our efforts beyond Patreon. Sign up today to join us.

We have worked with the Rust community on improving support for PowerPC, including identifying and suggesting a resolution for an issue with ABI interoperability on 64-bit PowerPC systems. Additionally, we were able to bootstrap Adélie Linux’s Rust toolchain from 1.60.0 to the present stable 1.80. Testing has succeeded on four architectures, and proceeds on the others.

We assisted our friends at Gentoo Linux with testing modern solutions for LDAP log in support. We hope to bring the lessons we learned with them to the Adélie Linux project in the coming months.

We identified an issue with the Clang compiler on PowerPC when targeting RISC-V, and are collaborating with the LLVM developers to find a solution.

During the work of updating Adélie Linux system packages, we found an issue with Islamic calendar calculations in ICU 75.1. We have sent the fix forward to the ICU developers through our contacts at Adélie Linux, and have patched it in the distribution in the meantime. We firmly believe that all people deserve equal access to Libre Software platforms, and we hope to continue helping all projects live up to that ideal.

We worked closely with the Servo browser engine community to make various improvements to their libraries, bringing improved compatibility, portability, and reliability. We recognise the deep importance of having multiple Web browser engines available, and hope that the Web will remain a free platform for all.

We embarked on a large project this month, and have found great success in it. Earlier in our Summer 2024 Plan, we mentioned a special improvement to the Adélie Linux distribution. We are now glad to announce that this improvement is the addition of multiple init system support, including dinit and systemd. Please see our engineer’s article for more information on the status of the systemd port.

These goals, and so many more, are only possible with the support of people like you, who understand the value and contribution that Libre Software provides to society. If you want to be a part of what’s next, please support us on Patreon or GitHub Sponsors. Your generosity helps us to improve software for everyone.

  1. I really appreciate your updates and the strides you guys are making at Wilcox Technologies to strengthen open source collaborations. It’s motivating to see the work you’re doing with Rust, especially on PowerPC support! Has the move to include multiple init systems with Adélie been as smooth a process as other improvements you detailed?
