May 2024 Progress

It has been a month of great progress at Wilcox Technologies. We have made strides towards a number of our goals, forging key partnerships, launching our Web site, and gaining momentum on important work in Adélie Linux. Now, I would like to detail some of our more noteworthy achievements.

We have launched the first version of our new Web site, www.wilcoxti.com. We have developed our new site as Libre Software and hope that others will find our work useful. The code and documentation are available now on our GitLab. The administration pages authenticate using the libre Keycloak platform via SAML, and authors use reStructuredText for all page content.

We have secured the services of a professional, independent bookkeeping firm in Tulsa to ensure our finances remain transparent and secure. We take great pride in our trustworthiness, and having an independent accountant is another way to guarantee our mission remains our sole focus.

We have entered into a partnership with an Australian firm, BTS. We share common values and principles, and hope to leverage each others’ talents to mutually grow and serve the greater Libre Software community.

We have identified the key projects and initiatives that we will focus on during the summer months. These include a number of improvements to the Adélie Linux system, and continued development on Project Spyglass. Our summer plan has been posted on our blog.

We had great acceleration in our work on the Adélie Linux project throughout May. We were able to finish the work needed to bring the open VMware Tools package, open-vm-tools, to the user repository – available now for both x86 and Arm virtual machines. During this work, we identified a few deficiencies in the Gentoo Linux packaging for open-vm-tools, and we are working with them to help correct it.

We also put significant effort into beginning the update of the Adélie Linux base system compiler from GCC 8 to GCC 13. This work will be foundational to bringing considerable improvements to the rest of the package tree, including needed updates to Qt and Mesa. These improvements will then allow us to focus our efforts on stabilising Wayland packages in Adélie across all type of hardware.
